Stop! Read This Before You Use that Paper
Do you know that an average U.S. office worker uses about 10,000 sheets of copy paper every year?
So the next question is, do you know how many trees are needed to make that much paper?
It takes 6% of a tree to make 500 sheets (or 1 ream) of paper. 1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or about 8,333.3 sheets. In effect, an average office worker “kills” about one tree every year.
And do you know that about 71 million tons of paper and paperboard are being used in the U.S. every year?
So how many trees are needed to make that much paper?
1 ton of uncoated virgin (non-recycled) printing and office paper uses 24 trees.
1 ton of 100% virgin (non-recycled) newsprint uses 12 trees.
1 ton of coated, higher-end virgin magazine paper (used for magazines like National Geographic and many others) uses a little more than 15 trees (15.36).
1 ton of coated, lower-end virgin magazine paper (used for newsmagazines and most catalogs) uses nearly 8 trees (7.68).
So, how many trees will die because of you?
To lessen your accountability in the killing of trees, you can practice recycling, buy recycled paper or whenever possible, send an email instead of printing your communication in paper.
